At Cardiff Kung Fu Academy we teach a syllabus of traditional Southern Shaolin Kung Fu. Our main system is Hung Kuen or Hung Gar Kuen Kung Fu which is a system of traditional Southern Shaolin Kung Fu that originates from the Shaolin Temples of the Fukien Province around 300 years ago.

Popularised by many Kung Fu movies, Hung Kuen Kung Fu includes many famous forms such as Taming The Tiger, Tiger & Crane and Iron Wire Boxing. The Hung Kuen syllabus is vast and takes the average practitioner 12 – 15 years to complete and in light of this we also teach shorter Southern Shaolin Kung Fu systems as an introduction to the art and then progress the student on to the Hung Kuen syllabus.

Lau Gar Kuen

Lau Gar Kuen is a Southern Shaolin Kung Fu system that consists of 2 empty hand forms a pole form.

Lau Gar 1

The first Lau Gar empty hand set (Lau Gar 1) utilises hand strikes, elbows, low kicks and simultaneous hand and foot strikes. This form is relatively short so is an ideal introduction to Southern Shaolin Kung Fu.

The second Lau Gar empty hand system (Lau Gar 2) is more advanced and contains beautiful flowing movements which disguise its hidden power. Alongside new hand and foot strikes, Lau Gar 2 introduces the student to internal power generation through it’s opening and closing movements.

The Lau Gar Pole form utilises the 8ft staff which is a challenge for any student to master. This form teaches the student how to generate explosive power with the long staff by whipping the pole around the back in multiple directions. The system also teaches the student how to combine kicks with pole strikes for maximum effect.

Hung Kuen Kung Fu

Hung Kuen Kung Fu (or Hung Ga Kuen) is an entire system of Kung Fu consisting of 5 empty hand systems and 6 weapon systems. Hung Kuen is rich in detail and all encompasing, and teaches the student everything from empty hand techniques to joint locking, footwork to vital point striking and weapons to chi gong (internal breathing exercises). Mastering Hung Kuen is a sizeable task and takes a huge amount of dedication from the student to complete.
